Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center is no stranger to technology, the project committee raised a number of concerns about the proposed wireless solution, including screen resolution and the potential for telemetry interference. But Symbol was able to quickly alleviate these concerns. Spectrum24, Symbol's next-generation wireless network, provides reliable high data throughput and excellent immunity to interference through its frequency-hopping technology. Spectrum24 allows fast, seamless roaming with load balancing among cells. Its capacity and range are expandable through the use of multiple access points; it offers very high system throughput and immunity to interference.

This paper presents a framework for providing fair service and supporting QoS requirements in IEEE 802.11 networks with multiple access-points (APs). These issues becomes critical as IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN are widely deployed in nationwide networks, linking tens of thousands of "hot-spots" for providing both real-time (voice) and non real-time (data) services to a large population of mobile users. However, both fairness and QoS guarantees cannot be supported in the current 802.11 standard.

As part of playing with Atheros's wireless cards under Linux, I've hacked up a program that uses the raw interface to pretend to be multiple access points. You can use this program even when connected to another access point. I don't think that it is of much practical use, but it certainly does show how to use the raw interface. To use it, you'll need the latest MadWiFi driver, as well as enough knowledge to configure your network interface and compile the software. Unfortunately, the single adapter can't send the probe responses out fast enough for clients to be able to consistently discover all the fake access points. The result is a client that will see a changing set of fake access points. You can get the code here: fakeaps.c
