Phillar Vision finds your route for only 200 euros

PVST-SPN350 Earlier this week we told you about a $300 GPS nav unit, and while that was among the least expensive GPS devices that we'd seen until that point, we just spied one that dropped the price a little bit more. Meet the PVST-SPN350 Phillar Vision Navigator, an inauspicious device that gets rolling with a 276MHz processor, 32MB of ROM, 64MB of RAM, a 3.5-inch screen (320 x 240), and an SD/MMC card slot. Apparently it doesn't come with the ability to play audio and video files (you gotta pay extra for that), which may be part of the reason that the Vision Navigator appeals to the spendthrift set; the whole unit will set you back a pair of Baroque bridges (that's €200, or $256).

AA Navigator's budget-priced Vive!

AA Navigator's budget-priced The definition of a budget-priced GPS navigation system is, like most such undefinable definitions, an ever-changing one -- currently sitting somewhere around the $300 mark --which AA Navigator just manages to squeeze under with its latest unit, the Vive! (or, le Vive!, if you prefer). This one's strictly for the European market, pre-loaded with maps of the U.K. and Ireland (including over 50,000 POIs), with a pricier option also available that'll add a 1GB SD card filled with maps for guiding you throughout all of Western Europe. The unit's specs look to be respectable enough given the price, including a 3.5-inch touch screen (apparently the only form of input), Centrality Atlas II 300MHz processor, 256MB ROM and 64MB SDRAM, an SD/MMC slot that'll accommodate cards up to 2GB, and a promised three hours of juice from the internal rechargeable lithium ion battery. The one thing that's not clear is the type of GPS chipset in the thing, although given the near-ubiquity of the SiRFstar III, we wouldn't bet against it. You can snag this one now direct from AA Navigator for Ł150 (or $280), with the aforementioned upgrade tacking an extra hundred pounds on top of that.

Averatec Voya 320 brings GPS on the cheap.

Voya 320 We last spotted Averatec's first GPS device this past summer, the Voya 350, and this week, the California-based company just released its update to the line: the Voya 320 navigation device. It seems to offer many of the same features that we saw in the previous model, including the same chip (Samsung 300MHz), the same amount of RAM (64MB), the same screen size and resolution (3.5-inch, 320 x 240), and same memory card slot (SD/MMC). However, the Voya 320 has a smaller battery life (two hours instead of four) and also has brought the price down to $300. Is an extra two hours of battery life worth $100? That's for you to decide.

Becker burns out with Ferrari-themed Traffic Assist

Ferrari-themed Traffic AssistIf you'll be hitting the streets this winter, and want to feel like you're on the autobahn no matter what roadway you embrace, Becker has unveiled a Ferrari-branded Traffic Assist Pro that takes navigation to an entirely different level. Originally crafted to fit in the exquisite F430 automobile, this luxurious GPS sports a 4-inch touchscreen, SiRF Star III receiver, 400MHz processor, 64MB of RAM, 64MB of flash memory, SD / MMC slots, USB 1.1 connectivity, 3.5-millimeter audio output, 2-watt integrated speaker, and a connector for an external antenna. Moreover, it boasts MP3 / WMA playback, doubles as a JPEG viewer, and houses NAVTEQ maps of 37 European countries. As expected, a list of speed radars will always be on tap thanks to its connection to the SCDB database, so you can put those massive vented brakes to use just in time; also, you'll have access to a basic flow of traffic information with the purchase, while a "premium" (read: more expansive road selection) service will be available for €50 ($64) per year. So if you need yet another exotic gadget to tide you over until you can afford the real deal, Becker's Ferrari-styled GPS will be available later this month for €699 ($898).

To say a GPS saved my life, and the life of my family would be a lie. I could however say, that my Magellan GPS Sport Trak was a reassuring tool during a real life threatening situation. And that would be the truth.
